At Ear Clear Specialists, microsuction and curettage are performed by qualified audiologists and audiometrists who have undertaken the Clear Ears Aural Care course in wax removal to safely remove wax, debris and foreign bodies from the ear canal.

These techniques are the preferred wax removal method of Ear Nose and Throat specialists. Unlike syringing, these methods don’t involve the use of liquid, therefore there are lower risks of infection and they are suitable for a wider range of people, including those with a perforated ear drum.

We use Vortek O-scopes to perform effective wax removal under direct vision. The O-scope has been developed by Dr John Vorrath (an Australian Ear Nose and Throat Specialist).

THE APPOINTMENT

Before your appointment, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire relating to your ear health which the clinician will discuss with you before examining your ears.

Ear Clear Specalists Process

A speculum (funnel) will then be inserted into the ear canal to allow the clinician to examine the ear canal, ear drum, any ear wax or presence of any foreign bodies. The clinician will then determine the most appropriate removal method.

If wax removal is required, the clinician will then explain the procedure and gain your consent to proceed.

A small microsuction tube attached to a suction machine will be placed into the canal, through the speculum. This tube then gently attaches to the wax which is drawn out of the ear canal.

The procedure is generally quite quick and pain free, particulary if the wax has been softened. In some cases, you may be asked to return for a follow up visit if the wax requires softening. This may be required for dry impacted wax and will make the procedure more comfortable.

Microsuction is well-tolerated with minimum discomfort experienced. It is a great routine to add to your regular health appointments if you have issues with wax build up, wear hearing aids or notice a blockage in the ears.
